Will Smartphones Replace Personal Computers?
Posted in School of Telecommunication on October 25th, 2011It seems that more and more our portable communication devices, such as cell phones, are becoming our primary web-Internet access and interaction instruments. In other words, with a “smart phone” we can now do just about everything that a PC can accomplish! Surf the net, watch videos, check emails, send photos; all this and more is now possible using a web-enabled smart phone. Will personal computers as they now exist simply become obsolete? Who wants to lug around a huge laptop, when we do all the same functions with a much smaller cell phone? Apple says no, according to the dutch site iphone 3G information, though both will come closer together.
The problem becomes one of storage and memory capacity. Our smart phones do not have the mega-gigabyte storage capacity of a full laptop. Plus there is the screen resolution to factor in. Small screens are harder to view than the big 10 inch plus PC screens, especially when it comes to watching videos and movies. We can also download and store large video files onto a laptop, but are limited in storage capacity with a cell phone. A laptop simply has more computing power. But the addition of cloud storage of memory files may be a method of replacing the memory capacity of a PC. Who knows? Technology keeps advancing, and at a very rapid pace at that!
