Windsor Castle was formally constructed by the renowned William the Conqueror, due to his assault of England in 1066. The original structure was put up from timber with earth fortifications. The Castle held a clear strategic location on a tall mound above the River Thames, & was one part of a number of of castles all around London, with the Tower of London, one day’s ride away, at its middle.
The Castle was then later reassembled in rock, & rose in worth over the following centuries. Henry 2nd put up the Round Tower and the original stone outer wall. After the English Civil War, the Castle’s key role became that of a royal palace. The Castle has stayed generally untouched from the beginning of the 19th century, apart from the overhaul job following the terrible fire in 1992.
